Pesticide Contamination of Surface and Groundwater in an Ethiopian Highlands’ Watershed

Agricultural intensification in sub-Saharan African countries has significantly increased pesticide applications. Information on residues and their transport groundwater streams is needed to properly manage reduce any harm the ecosystem environment. This information lacking volcanic soils of Ethiopian highlands. Therefore, this study was conducted assess concentrations ground surface water risk humans aquatic life. The 9 km2 rural watershed Robit Bata Lake Tana Basin selected. Crops were grown under rainfed irrigated conditions. Pesticide use assessed, samples collected from eight wells at outlet twice rain phase once dry phase. Samples analyzed for chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, (? ?) endosulfan, profenofos, NO3?, pH. Chlorpyrifos which are strongly adsorbed slowly degrading pesticides, found nearly all samples, with maximum 8 µg L?1 chlorpyrifos 3 endosulfan. Maximum only slightly lower. weakly fast profenofos detected after spraying groundwater, indicating preferential depths up m. average concentration 0.38 ?g dimethoate waters 1.24 groundwater. Profenofos not water. In 0.05 L?1. Surface endosulfan highly toxic fish. World Health Organization banned these pesticides worldwide. It should be phased out Ethiopia safeguard ecological health Tana, rich biodiversity endemic fish species.
